Glacial Veins - Aerial Iceland
Glacial rivers draining the Highlands of Iceland come in a variety of colors, some of which can be seen here. The different colors are influenced by the depth of the tributary, the amount of dissolved sediments (rock flour) in suspension, and the size of those particles. Some wavelengths of light are absorbed by the dissolved particles, those which we see have been reflected and are visible. The type of rock that the glaciers erode also impact color. Enough science! Viewed from above, the effects can be magnified and the rivers take on a life of their own and look pretty cool!
