Reine Rorbuer

These classic fishing shacks were home for several days while in the Lofoten Islands this fall. Many of these bright red buildings have been converted to accommodations in response to the booming tourist industry, while keeping their rustic charm and homage to the cod fishing industry that dominates the area. Often, one end of the building hangs over the water supported by poles or stilts, while the other end is land bound. This gave the fishermen easy access to their boats. The sod roofs are another traditional nordic element that help waterproof and insulate the buildings. Under the grassy top is birch bark, which accounts for the watertight effect. The sod holds everything in place. I tried finding an image that contained all of these classic parts of the nordic culture, with some lighting to match. This stormy sunrise seemed to do the trick. Images of these Rorbu or Rorbuer are pretty common, so this was one of my takes on a classic scene.
