Blue Lagoon

Cloud and fog briefly gave way to some sun during the hike from Sulzenau Hut to Dresdner Hut, revealing this beautiful glacial lake and the surrounding peaks and glacier. The blue-green color is due to the dissolved rock particles (rock flour) in the water. Water absorbs different wavelengths of light. Depending on impurities and depth, different light spectrums are displayed. Deep lakes tend to be more blue because they absorb the weaker red spectrum. However, the rock flour can change what spectra are absorbed, thus a color shift occurs in the glacial melt. The scene would have looked much different under bright sun, and I rather liked the mystery the moving clouds and fog lent to the view. The Sulzenauferner Glacier and Fernerstube glacier are most prominent, R to L. The high peals are L to R Wilder Freiger and Zuckerhutl.
