Iceland Summer Adventure
10th August 2015

My recent summer exploration in southern Iceland felt more like a return to fall and winter. I felt like I was on a different planet compared to my January visit to the same area. The heavy snows and storms which I encountered in the winter had left their mark and extensive snow fields still remained even at the height of the Icelandic summer. Weather can make or break a photographic trip, and luckily the Norse Gods gave me relatively good weather, though there seemed some rain and storms within eyesight each day. That actually made for some great lighting and much preferred over a blue sky beach day. It was go-go-go most of the time, as there was never true darkness and lots of time to get to locations I wanted to visit. Highlights of the trip included a flight over the Highlands, still thawing out from winter. Seeing the terrain from above was fantastic, and gave me a preview what of I would encounter during my 110 miles of hiking over a 2 week period. The most extensive lupine fields I have ever seen were a welcome surprise on the southern coast. Too many waterfalls to count or photograph, so I concentrated on those when lighting conditions were prime.
More images to come as the editing continues. Enjoy images from southern Iceland in the Iceland Summer Gallery.

Back from Maui
27th May 2015

Just returned from 9 days on Maui. Never had been there before, but was interested to see how it compared to Kauai and the Big Island which I visited in 2007. The weather was fantastic and getting around didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would. Lots of pretty sunsets and stunning beaches. The beaches on the West coast and Southern coast were pretty busy, but that is paradise for you. Didn't get to the Hana coast for this trip but maybe down the road. Made it up to Haleakala for sunrise twice, with the first visit being the most impressive. Despite the interesting hiking terrain and gorgeous sunsets, the trip highlight was swimming / snorkeling with turtles on most days. Just a unique and intimate experience to be in their world on their terms. No great pics from a crappy little underwater camera, but the sites are still ingrained in my mind. I had similar experiences snorkeling in Kauai. Enjoy images from the Valley Isle in the Maui Gallery.

Mural Sized Images - Jordan's Furniture
25th May 2015

Jordan's Furniture in Nashua, NH has just completed an outdoor installation of several of my White Mountain images as part of their exterior renovations this spring.

All are prints enlarged to between 12 and 22 feet wide by 11 feet high. I used special techniques in photographing and post processing the largest panoramic images in case some large prints were needed down the road, but I had no idea of the scale that these would be printed at. I was very impressed with their quality at such large sizes and close viewing distance. I expect the images will be visible for the remainder of the summer / early fall, so if you are in the area be sure to check them out.

Iceland in Winter
21st January 2015
Just returned from a brief 5 day trip to south east Iceland in search of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). I had never seen them, and it was something I really wanted to experience sooner rather than later! To see them would be great, to photograph them another challenge new to my photography. Night / star photography is something that I haven't gotten into, but shooting the Aurora was a great incentive. In addition, I finally had the opportunity to photograph and explore a glacial ice cave, which is another 1st for me. The last highlight of the trip was photographing the volcanic black sand beach across from Jokulsarlon Lagoon. Seeing ice bergs on a black sand beach was such a unique experience. I found the best images required getting wet, and in 20 degree temps. not the most comfortable conditions. Thankfully I was prepared with the right clothing so spending hours roaming the beach was a real joy. New images from the trip can be found in the Iceland Winter Gallery.
Weather can be a challenge at this time of year in Iceland. I encountered intense snow and wind storms at some point every day of my trip, but also brief periods of sun as well. With only 4 hours of daylight, I needed to make the most of those times and hope for clear skies at night to see the Aurora. Only a brief 2 hours during my 4th night was clear enough to see the Aurora, but it was still the most memorable time of the trip. A 4 x 4 vehicle with studded tires is the way to go, as hours of driving may go by without seeing another person. Enjoy the new photos!

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport Mural
12th January 2014
I always take photos with the ultimate goal of making a great print. Great care is taken during the field exposure to get sharpness where it is needed so that a large print can be made, if needed. While most of my printing needs are 3-4 ft. or less, a recent project has tested the limits of making a large printed image. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport has recently commissioned a 30 foot x 9 foot Panoramic Image of Portsmouth, NH as part of their Baggage Claim B Renovations. So the next time you fly into Manchester-Boston Airport, enjoy the views as you wait for your luggage.

Look for it later this summer in the Magazine, and in Backpacker Magazine as well. The view from the top is usually a good one, but don't miss all of fun of getting there.

30th March 2013
I am very pleased and honored to announce that I have been selected winner in 6 different categories and Overall Grand Prize Winner by the Austrian Alpine Club's(UK) annual mountain photography competition. A memorable trip, can't wait to return to the Alps. You can see the winning images and many more in my Austria Gallery.
Back from Patagonia
28th March 2013
28th March 2013
I have just returned from just over 3 weeks backpacking and trekking in Argentina and Chilean Patagonia. Many new images from the trip will be uploaded shortly so check back in the next few days. Despite the often publicized high winds and rainy weather, conditions proved to be fantastic for logging over 100 miles on the trails in Torres del Paine National Park and Los Glaciers National Park. At times, the weather was too clear and settled to produce those surreal lenticular clouds which are trademark Patagonia. While the classic mountain ranges dominated the landscape, my most memorable moment from the trip occurred while photographing Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre atop a nearby mountain top. An Andean Condor, the 2nd largest flying bird in the world, floated up to me and hovered for a moment along side me. I was shocked and amazed all at once, as we looked at each other eye to eye separated by only 10 feet. Before I could get my camera pointed in its direction, it had soared high above me. Hope you enjoy the new photos!

Austria - Alpine Heaven
20th September 2012
20th September 2012
Just returned from the Tyrolean region of Austria with many Images to share. This was my first time in the country and found it to be an alpine wonderland. After landing in Innsbruck, I traveled to the nearby Stubai Valley and trekked the Stubai Hohenweg. This multi-day hut to hut hike travels through some of the most breath taking alpine-glacier country in Austria. After brief visit to the cultural center of Salzburg, hiking resumed in nearby Hohe Tauern National Park. This is Austria's largest National Park largest nature reserve in the Alps. Weather ranged from the extremes of clear sunny days to snow storms and dense fog, creating challenging photographic conditions which ultimately led to more interesting photographs. Check back often, as I will be updating the Austria Gallery beginning in the next few days.
